Season Hierarchy

Writer: Ange DisburyAnge Disbury

I’ve heard so many sentiments

of “you’ll see spring again”

And “hold on through the winter”

just waiting for that day when

The cold has gone, the light returns

and things begin to bloom

The idea that warmth and summer

cannot come a day too soon.

But it doesn’t sit quite right

this clear cut message of prosperity

As the measure of success,

that you’ve arrived when ‘struggle free’

The idea that darker seasons

are just there to be endured

Until the weather changes

and we find our rich reward.

I want to see my breath

in the crisp October air

And feel the scarf’s embrace

As it covers me with care

Witnessing the turning colours

of my neighbourly trees

And how others are feeling

about the changing breeze

I don’t buy into the idea that

only spring and summer are home

The thing I most desire is

knowing I don’t walk the seasons alone.
